Jose Fernandes, private ski instructor and guide in Niseko, Japan

ABOUT JOSE

From the mountains to Niseko.

A lifetime around skiing, a passion for Japan, and a vocation built around sharing the mountain.

MY STORY

I've been between the mountains and the ocean my whole life.

Jose Fernandes, ski instructor and guide in Hokkaido

I'm half Portuguese and half Austrian, so I've been between the mountains and the ocean my whole life.

I got into skiing because my father had a passion for it. He introduced me to the industry and the skiing world from the time I could walk, and skiing quickly became a huge part of my life.

Japan had always been a destination for me. I had been a long-time admirer of Japanese culture and history, and of course the country's famous dry powder.

So when I had the opportunity to come to Japan six years ago, I didn't hesitate.

What started as a destination I had always wanted to experience eventually became home.

WHY I TEACH

Skiing became more than something I loved.

Becoming an instructor and guide gave me a real purpose within the ski industry. I wanted to share something that brings me so much joy with other people.

It turns out it was my vocation all along.

Every lesson and every guiding day is completely different. Every skier arrives with different experiences, expectations and goals, and I genuinely enjoy figuring out what makes their day better.

“I really try to empathise with people and give them exactly what they want — and a bit more on top.”

MY APPROACH

The best days are the ones built around the skier.

01

Listen first.

I want to understand your experience, your goals and what you actually want from your time in Japan.

02

Adapt to you.

There is no single way to teach someone to ski. The approach changes depending on the skier, the terrain and the conditions.

03

Read the mountain.

Snow, weather, visibility and terrain all influence what makes sense on a particular day.

04

Give a little more.

The goal is not simply to finish the lesson. I want you to leave feeling that you got something genuinely valuable from your day.

NISEKO & HOKKAIDO

Six years in Japan and still exploring.

Niseko has become my base, but Hokkaido offers far more than one mountain.

From Niseko and Rusutsu to different corners of Hokkaido, I enjoy finding the right terrain and experience for the conditions and the people I'm skiing with.

That's one of the things I love most about guiding: there is always another line, another mountain or another way to experience the snow.
